This is the story of one man – an experienced Canadian tanker who saw two tours in the Afghanistan theatre from 2006 to 2008, commanding both Leopard 1 and Leopard 2.

By now, the sun was up but it was still overcast. I could see Kheybari Ghar Mountain as we approached from the south-east. The terrain was still open, but there were now more villages starting to appear as we travelled north. I managed to find one of the main routes in the area and followed it until we were on the outskirts of the town of Bazar-i-Panjwai. I then followed the paved road through the town.
I could see on the Afghani faces that they were unsure of what to make of us. Some of the children waved, while other people just seemed to disappear. I heard a report on the radio that our interpreter, through reliable sources, had overheard the locals calling us ‘The New Evil’.
